PHOENIX, Ariz. - U.S. Rep. Ed Pastor, D-Ariz., invites you to receive assistance in applying for U.S. citizenship on April 22, a Saturday, at a workshop where trained volunteers will help legal permanent residents complete their citizenship applications. The assistance is free.

To receive assistance on April 22, people need to register by April 17 by contacting Congressman Pastor's office at 602-256-0551. People also may register in person at the office, which is located at 411 N. Central Ave., Suite 150, Phoenix. Office hours are Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Space is limited.

Once registered for Citizenship Day, applicants will receive a packet with a list of information they will need to provPHOENIX, Ariz. - U.S. Rep. Applicants also will need to provide on April 22 the required application fee, which currently is $400, payable to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and $13 for immigration photos, if needed. Chicanos Por La Causa Federal Credit Union will be selling money orders on site on April 22 for a $1 fee.

To become a U.S. citizen, a person must, among other requirements:

Have been a legal permanent resident of the United States for at least five years, or

  • Have been married to a U.S. citizen for at least three years and been a legal permanent resident for at least three years.
  • Speak, read and write English unless one qualifies for an exemption.
  • Have good moral character.

Please contact Congressman Pastor's office as soon as possible to register for an appointment on April 22. More information and the location of the Citizenship Day event will be provided at the time of registration with Congressman Pastor's Office.
